Yesterday 1013 pilgrims registered at the Pilgrims' Office in Santiago. The first time in 2013 more than 1000 pilgrims arrived in one day. It was busy.
So far this year 20,949 pilgrims have arrived.
At the end of this first third of 2013 when around 10% of the expected total for 2013 have arrived we can begin to look for trends. The first thing that strikes me is that the overall growth appears to be slightly down. Usually we see a growth rate of 5 - 6% year on year. In this first third of the year the growth is less than 4% compared to last year. "Is the Camino reaching a plateau?" asked someone in the Pilgrims' Office today. Too early to tell was the collective view. But the statistics will be closely observed as the year emerges.
In this first period of the year the number of Spanish pilgrims has reduced slightly. We think this is due to the very bad weather in Spain earlier this year. Spaniards who planned to walk simply stayed at home. However foreigners who had booked their flights continued to come and the increases we saw last year in the numbers from English speaking countries seems to be continuing.
